The Mool Mantar is the first hymn in the Guru Granth Sahib. The ‘Mool Mantra’ sums up Sikh beliefs about God, and is said to be Guru Nanak's first teaching.
The Mantra :
ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
Ikoaʼnkār saṯ nām karṯā purakẖ nirbẖao nirvair akāl mūraṯ ajūnī saibẖaʼn gur parsāḏ.
Ek Onkaar - There is only one God
Karta Purakh - He is a Creator
Nirbhao - He is without fear
Nirvair - He is without hate
Akal Murat - He is beyond time
Ajuni Saibhan - He is beyond birth and death
Gur Parsad - He is self-existent
